Magnetic Silica Beads with Hydrophobic Surface

Magnetic silica beads with a hydrophobic surface are well suited for applications in proteomics including protein and peptide sample concentration, desalting and fractionation, and reducing sample complexity. The surface is coated with C4, C8 or C18 -alkyl groups that are typical for reversed phase applications. Peptides and proteins bind to the beads via hydrophobic interactions between the protein/peptide and the hydrophobic surface of the beads. Each surface is suited for specific purposes:

  • C4 groups - purification and fractionation of larger biomolecules such as proteins; relatively low hydrophobicity

  • C8 groups - sample preparation in for proteomic profiling and biomarker research; intermediate hydrophobicity

  • C18 groups - purification, concentration and desalting of peptides and protein digests; high hydrophobicity
